Dairy Free Mashed Potatoes - Easy Side Dish

You have probably cooked potatoes the traditional way. But you should try the dairy free mashed potatoes recipe. There are many different ways to make potatoes and each one of them has their own benefits. What's the difference between the traditional and this recipe? The main difference is that in the recipe you use the oven for the potatoes instead of boiling them.

This recipe can be done with just a few ingredients and it takes about 10 minutes to prepare it and 65 minutes for the cooking process. That’s a total of 75 minutes to make this food.

Potatoes side dish


  • 20 baby potatoes (Russet, Yukon gold or white variety)
  • 2 cloves garlic (crushed)
  • 1 1/4 tsp fresh red basil leaves (crushed and without stems)
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • ground black pepper (to taste)


  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204° C).

  2. Rinse the potatoes.

  3. Carefully prick each potato with a fork around 3 to 4 times.
  4. Rub the potatoes with a bit of olive oil, using a basting brush or your hands.

  5. Roast the potatoes, with the skin on, for about 65 minutes.

    Or until cooked and crispy on the outside, check with a butter knife or a fork.

  6. Then in a separate container add the basil, olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper.

  7. Now you can leave the skin on (or you can peel them).

  8. With a potato masher then mash the potatoes entirely.

    Tip: If you decided to peel the potatoes, at this point you can use a potato ricer for a softer texture.

  9. Add the basil, olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper mix to the mashed potatoes.

  10. Keep mashing them until everything is well mixed and they are completely smooth.

Before you begin making the dish; keep in mind you do not need a vast amount of fancy ingredients to make the dairy free mashed potatoes recipe. You can basically find all of them in a regular grocery store. The first and main ingredient is the baby potatoes. You can choose between the Russet and Yukon gold variety as they are quite soft making them ideal for mashing.

The garlic cloves and the basil leaves need to be crushed so they can mix well with the potatoes once you add them. Once the potatoes are done you can decide whether you keep the skin on the potatoes or simply peel them. It all depends on your personal taste; either way you are going to end up with a simple meal that will fill you up nicely.
