Indian Bread Recipe



The potato Indian bread is a very exotic recipe you can use to delight your family and friends. This is not your typical potato dish and you will see why is something you have to try at least once. The bread is similar to what is known as paratha and is a typical dish consumed mostly on the Indian culture and with different variations in other countries.

Before you begin you need to know this unusual recipe have a longer than usual preparation time (around 40 minutes) but you can be sure is going be worth your time. After it has been prepared; the dish needs some resting time (3 to 6 hours) to develop its consistency and enhance the taste. The cooking stage that follows is surprisingly short and simple as it only needs 7 minutes to be completed.


Preparation Time: 40 minutes

Resting Time for the Dough: 3 to 6 hours

Cooking Time: 7 minutes

Servings: 6


Ingredients:

  • 3 Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 3/4 tsp chili powder
  • dash of salt
  • dash of garlic powder
  • 1 3/4 cups of sifted whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 tsp of ground turmeric
  • 5 cilantro leaves (chopped)
  • 3 tbsp of any plain, organic soy based yogurt
  • 1 1/2 tsp canola oil (or virgin coconut oil)

Directions on how to cook potato paratha:

  1. You can bake and peel the potatoes (or you could alternatively peel and boil the potatoes); then mash them completely.

  2. Combine the other ingredients, except the oil, together.

  3. Now you should knead the dough until smooth.

    If you need to make the dough a little smoother add a small amount of water to achieve a more velvety texture.

  4. Put the dough in a covered bowl and let it sit on a counter for about 3 to 6 hours.

    This will allow more intense flavors to develop.

  5. Preheat a flat griddle and use your hands to roll the dough into small oval balls.

  6. Add a bit of oil to the outside of this dough ball.

  7. Cook on the griddle and use a spatula to slightly flatten the bread as it is cooking.


It is a delicious and more interesting alternative to the traditional breads. You can use the potato Indian bread like the pita bread and eat it with salads or natural sandwich spreads.
