How to Improve Your Garden Soil

Taking care of your garden soil can result in many benefits. In order to remain healthy we need to consume a certain amount of vegetables otherwise our bodies start to get sick. Vegetables are an essential part of the human diet.

One of the consequences of eating unhealthy is the proliferation of heart diseases. This type of condition is very dangerous and its frequency has been increasing on the last couple of years. The healthy consumption of vegetables can help our bodies to return to their optimal state. Sadly many vegetables has been modified genetically or sprayed with pesticides so their healthy benefits cannot be guaranteed.

There is one alternative and that is to grow your own vegetables. Creating your own crops will provide you with a very nutritious food that you can trust and save you some money at the same time. In order to make good vegetables you will need a pretty decent garden soil. First you will need to make some testing to the soil to check if the land can be used with farming purposes. There are several simple tests that you can make in order to be certain if the terrain can be productive in anyway.

Testing the ph of your soil is essential if you want to grow a good amount of vegetables.

The ph of youSoilr soil should be around 6.5 for most vegetables to grow healthy. Your soil should not be too alkaline or acidic otherwise it will limit the amount of plants you can grow. Measuring the ph is done by the use of a ph tester that is available at the Internet or any gardening store. If the ph of your soil is 6 or less it means is too acidic. A measure of ph over 7 will indicate that your soil is alkaline. There are several things you can do if the ph of your garden soil is not at the appropriate level.

Adding lime to your acidic terrain can increase the ph of it making it less acid. If your land is too alkaline adding sulfur will make it more acid. Another thing you have to keep an eye on is the drainage of your garden. An easy way to test the drainage of your garden is to make a hole with a diameter of 6 inches and 1 foot deep. The next step is filling the hole with water and wait for it to drain. Once the water has been drained fill the hole again and count how many hours it takes to drain. If it takes more than 7 hours you have a draining problem.

What is a soil profile?

The availability of nutrients is also extremely important for your garden. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are needed nutrients for the plants to grow strong. One way to supply your garden with these essential minerals is by using organic fertilizers. Making an organic fertilizer is easy just use any organic material like dead leaves, branches, rotten vegetables, fruits and vegetables peels. A couple of inches of this material will help your garden soil to get all the nutrients that it needs.
