Are potatoes bad for you if you have high cholesterol

Have to lower my cholesterol and am trying to watch what I eat; is there a type of potato that is best?

Answer:

Hello,

Potatoes could help you to lower your high cholesterol level; because they have the necessary nutrients you need to be healthy.

Potatoes have vitamins, minerals, fiber and they do not have cholesterol or fat.

You can eat any variety. The russet variety is one of the most popular, but my favorite is the Yukon gold since it is great for boiling. For baking I would recommend the russet variety.

The healthiest ways to cook potatoes are by baking, boiling or steaming them. Avoid adding any unhealthy greasy toppings like bacon, for example. Instead, you can eat potatoes with other root vegetables if you like.

For professional advice consult your nutritionist.

Potatoes are good for the health NEW
by: Mary

Actually the potatoes are quite different from white bread and other high glycemic index processed foods. Even when potatoes temporarily increase the sugar levels in the blood, that sugar is quickly used by the body as an energy source and are not deposited in the body as fat.

One of the greatest advantages of the potatoes is that they are not only rich in nutrients, they also have the highest satiation index. This means they can keep you full for a longer period of time than any other food.

At the same time if you are full for a longer period of time your body requires to eat less food, which means you can lose weight in the most natural manner plus your actual sugar and cholesterol levels will become lower.

In summary a person that frequently eat potatoes in a healthy way (no deep frying or cheese) will have a healthier weight and overall better health than someone that doesn?t.

Potatoes raise blood glucose too fast NEW
by: Ina

I learned that potatoes raise the blood glucose level fast, and that any glucose that isn't processed by the body is deposited as fat, which in turn leads to higher cholesterol readings.

In essence, all foods with a high glycemic index that release their sugars fast (including white bread, white potatoes, etc) are not recommended for lowering bad cholesterol levels.

It is true that potatoes have vital nutrients, but other versions such as sweet potatoes are far superior even here, and should be preferred over the white variety.

Please comment if you have further information about this, as I'd like to hear a variety of competent opinions on this issue.

True about potato NEW
by: Dharmesh Shah

I am suffering from high cholesterol and high triglycerides and was told that I shouldn't take potato in regular food.

But now I know that potato is a healthy carbohydrate and I am very happy about the knowledge.
